Welcome to the YMCA Indian Princess Program!
Introduction:
The Indian Princesses are a
YMCA sponsored Parent/Child program for girls in grades K-3 and their
dad's. The program respectfully follows an American Indian theme and focuses on
both developing children and building a special family bond through having fun.
You can read through the General Overview
page to get an idea of what it's all about or browse the whole
Introductory Handbook for more details. But for most people, the best
part is the campouts and the South Hills area YMCA has 3-4 weekend campouts at Kon-O-Kwee and Deer Valley in cabin facilities every year from Fall
to Spring. However, there are also 8-10 other afternoon or evening events
spread throughout the school year, such as Sailboat Races, Cosmic Bowling,
Dances, and Parties, so there's almost always something to get excited about
just around the corner. Our Calendar Page
shows most upcoming events, but it's not a comprehensive list for the whole
year. Additionally, each "tribe" typically gathers together each month on their
own for crafts, games, projects, refreshments, etc, but participation is
completely voluntary. Everyone is free to get as much or as little from the
program as suits their own personal schedule. Still don't get the picture? Stop
by our Photos section to see some
the kids in action or download the latest Princess
Patter newsletter (under Favorite Links) and read up on what's going
on.
Costs:
The annual program fee is only $30 per family for those with a standard YMCA
family membership!!!
(Full YMCA family memberships are typically $110 per year and
include all the member benefits.)
The cost of each single day event varies by activity and typically ranges from
FREE to $25 per person.
The campouts are $75 per person for the whole weekend and include lodging,
food and many activities.
And remember that there is never an attendance requirement for any activity or
campout. With the $30 annual program fee you may attend as many or as few
events as you wish.
Getting Started:
Active recruitment rallies happen for each school district at the beginning of
the school year. Look for a flyer to come home from school with your daughter
in early September to get more details. You may also want to contact the
South Hills YMCA directly to make sure that you get it or check the
rally dates. And don't worry if you missed the recruitment phase, our
helpful
can place you and your daughter in an existing tribe at anytime during the
school year.
What To Do Next?:
The South Hills area YMCA has one of the largest Indian Princess programs in
the nation and has been successfully helping dad's every step of the way for
many years with recruitment rallies, sponsoring tribes and mentors (called
Skejunkas) to get you started having fun. All that you need to do is let us
know that you're interested and we'll take care of the rest.
